During the month of May in 1909 Elder W. M. Peterson, under a big
oak tree seated on a soda pop case, began singing "Somebody’s
Wrong about the Bible." He was stationed across from Starrville
CME church. As the CME church was holding their service, they heard
Elder Peterson singing and came to see what was going on. He took
this opportunity to take out his bible and began preaching Church of
the Living God doctrine. After hearing Elder Peterson preach, 30
people became candidates for the first baptism. The baptism service
took place in the creek that still runs about 300 yards in front of
the present site. The first deacons selected were Matt Childs, Sy
Scott, Jake King, and Henry Ferguson. Sy Scott was elected chairman
of the deacon board. Matt Childs donated the property for the
church. His wife Emily Childs, George Childs, and John Childs signed
the deed. The deed stated that the land would belong to the church
as long as it was the Church of the Living God. If for any reason
the Church of the Living God was no longer using the land for a
church, the land would revert back to the Childs heirs. A frame
building was built that following August, and then 60 more joined
the church. The people made boards and covered the church. Levi
Butler owned a sawmill and the men used mule teams and hauled the
lumber each day to the building. Seven years later a storm destroyed
the church and Morgan Freeman’s house. The church was later
rebuilt under Elder Goolsbee. Years later the church was remodeled.
Harry Webb covered it for $50 and the carpenter work was done by
Bro. Stacey Mosley. The members back in those days were very
dedicated. Even though the church had none of the modern
conveniences, such as electricity, night service was held every
Sunday. In the late 30’s Bro. Jim Williams led an effort to
install electric lights. This effort was successful, but shortly
thereafter night service was discontinued. In 1968 the congregation,
under the leadership of the late Elder A. L. Stallion, built the
present modern structure. The contractor was W. R.
Guthrie
Construction Company. The last gathering in the old church was the
last Sunday in February, 1968 for Sis. Ethel Shaw’s funeral. In
April of 2001, under the leadership of Elder Clifton Lee and Elder
Gregory Williams, the congregation decided to build another worship
facility. Land was purchased on Highway 271 a short distance
from our present church. On October 29, 2001 construction
began on a 12,300 square foot facility that will include a sanctuary
and a family life center. The family life center will house an
industrial sized kitchen, a gymnasium, men's and women's dressing rooms, and several classrooms.
Construction is scheduled to be complete in April 2002. Starrville has been blessed with the following pastors:
Elder Peterson, Elder Martin, Elder Snell, Elder Jackson, Elder
Goolsbee, Bishop C. C. Berry, Sr., Elder McCray, Elder Dismue, Elder
